The Great Depression and World War II Shaped My Grandmas Life My grandma, Alma Jean, was born in 1935 in Silo, Oklahoma, just outside of Durant. Her birth certificate says she was born in Durant because Silo was too small to be considered a real town. She lived there on a farm with her parents, Orval and Maggie Dale. It was the middle of the Great Depression, and they were a farming family at a time when it seemed like no one could make a living off the land. To supplement their income, Orval and his father worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). President Roosevelt set up the WPA the same year that my grandma was born (Divine 760). The WPA was similar to other work relief programs such as the CCC, PWA, CWA and NYA.†¦show more content†¦Her dad would sell the skins from the animals he caught. One winter, Maggie (his wife), used the money to buy my grandma a new red coat. However, despite their efforts, the family couldnt afford to stay in Oklahoma. Like many families during the Great Depression, they had to move to survive. In 1933, there were 5,190 bank failures in the U.S. (Divine 755) and unemployment was at 25 percent (Conlin 684). In 1930 a drought hit much of the South and Midwest. It lasted ten years and turned Americas farmland into an unproductive wasteland (Current 737). The drought area came to be known as the Dust Bowl (736). This, combined with the high unemployment and collapsed economy of the Depression, forced families to leave their farms in search of work. In 1932, one in four families living in the Dust Bowl was forced off its land (Conlin, 685). Most of them headed to California (686). They were called Okies and once they got to California, things usually werent much better. Work was hard to find, and because of Californias seasonal crops, it didnt last long. They lived migrant lives, following the crops. The wages were low and many employers found ways to cheat workers out of the little they did earn. Most of the Okies were homeless. They were despised and persecuted by police and native Californians (Current 738). My grandmas story, however, isnt as grim. In 1941, when my grandma was in first grade, they decided it was time to leave.

The processing of water hyacinth into briquette would have a significant role not only in the development of an alternative fuel, but also in the preservation of the environment. The water hyacinth that was harvested, dried, and pulverized was mixed with cassava starch and acacia seed binder by being compressed into briquettes in a manually-operated machine. The experimental set-up made use of dry and fresh water hyacinth while a traditional charcoal served as the control. In all the quality tests done, T- test showed that there was no significant difference between the experimental product and the commercial product in terms of various parameters, at 0. 05 level of significance. The results of experimentation and data analysis showed that the experimental product is just as effective as the commercial briquette, with better potential of helping the environment by reducing the negative consequences brought about by water hyacinth’s rapid profusion. In this case, the visa application made by the applicant reads the GPO box by express post before the relevant deadline expired. However the department did not collect the visa application until the deadline for the same has been expired. Therefore, the court was required to decide if the GPO box of the department can be considered as the "office of immigration" or if it can be considered as a part of the office of immigration.At the same time, if GPO box cannot be considered as the office of immigration, it was required to be decided if the applicant has substantially complied with the requirement. In this way, the applicant had deposited the visa application at the GPO Box that has been specified by the Department of Minister for Immigration and Border Protection while migration regulationrequired that the visa application has to be made at the office of Immigration in Australia. In this regard, the reasons given by the Court were that the GPO box was leased by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for receiving the visa applications and therefore it can be considered as a "place for transactions of business" or in the alternative, the GPO Box can be considered as "a place for business" for the department or a place where the business of the department is carried on.The department has leased the GPO Box for receiving written applications for the grant of visa. Arrangements have been put in place by the Department that the visa applications and shall be collected from the GPO Box and the same will be delivered that the Processing Center of the Department where the officers of the Department process all the visa applications. Although it has been mentioned on the website of the Department that the relevant visa applications can be made by other methods like facsimile, courier or these applications can also be made online, it needs to be noted that the applications can be made by posting the same to the GPO box that has been nominated by the department in this regard. As a result, the Court accepted the submission of the applicant that even if GPO box cannot be considered as a stand-alone office of the Department for the purpose of regulation 2.10,it needs to be considered as a part of the office of the Department of Immigration. As a result, it was stated by the court that the GPO box can be considered as an 'Office of Immigration' and therefore, it can be said that the application that has been received in the GPO box needs to be considered as an application that has been made at the office of Immigration. On the other hand, the court did not accept the submission of the Minister that satisfactory evidence was not present that can establish that GPO box has a stable physical existence like any other "place". In this regard the court considered the evidence given by the ACDC manager regarding the Express Post Service of Australia Post and how it receives, sorts and delivers the items. In case of certain specified routes, next business day delivery has been guaranteed by Australia Post in case of all the Express Post envelops that have been lodged correctly on a business day. In this regard, the manager of ACDC also gave evidence that the GPO box number 2399 in Adelaide has been leased by the Department of immigration from Australia Post. All the items arriving at the ACDC were scanned on their arrival and then these items were transferred to the relevant area and sorted so that they can be sent to their destinations, including the post office boxes. It was also stated that once an item has been placed in the post office box, it is not any more under the control of Australia Post. At the same time, an employee of a company named Converga gave evidence that they had a contract with the Department of Immigration and collected mail from ACDC every day and delivered it to the department. This evidence was considered as sufficient to rebut the contention of the Minister of Immigration that no sufficient evidence is present which can establish that the GPO box of the department has a stable physical presence like a 'place'. As a result, the court stated that the GPO box can be considered as a place which can be leased and where mail can be delivered physically and at the same time it can be collected from this place. In the same way, the court also accepted the summation of the applicant that the specification of the GPO box by the Department in the relevant booklet and its letter amounts to evidence that supports their main contention that the GPO box is at least a part of the office of the Department for receiving the applications. As a result, this submission was accepted by the court. By applying the principles of golden rule of statutory interpretation, the court stated that the doctrine of substantial compliance was not applicable in the case.The question is that of construction if an act that has failed to comply with the condition regarding the exercise of statutory power is invalid and therefore of no effect. Ogden, the first mayor of Chicago was also the first to attempt to give Chicago a railroad. He chartered the Galena and Chicago Railroad in 1836, but it collapsed with the economic disaster of 1837 (Berger 3). Ogden tried again in 1846, and on October 22, 1848 Chicago's first locomotive, Pioneer, was loaded onto the tracks (Casey, Douglas 59). In retrospect, Pioneer turned out to be a fitting name for the city's first train, because by 1866 there were more than forty railroads serving Chicago and the city's population had skyrocketed to just under 300,000. There were many problems that needed to be resolved starting in the 1830s, before a railroad could become a versatile enough to be a cost effective carrier of freight and people. The nation's original tracks had been built mainly of wood, although cheaper than iron, it was quickly decided that iron's durability was well worth the extra cost. Another development was the placement of ballas, or pebbles, that covered the bottom of the tracks and added weight and stability along with drainage to the tracks. Also, the trains were known to collide head on into grazing animals. The problem lay in how to keep the animal from being pulled under the train and causing it to derail. Soon came the Illinois Central, the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific, and the Chicago Burlington and Quincy. Many more came and connected Chicago to nearly every part of the US (Gordon 151). If one looked at a map of all the major trunk lines that stretched over the United States, he would see a wheel with Chicago as the hub (Berger 22). The busy development of all these new railroads furnished the developing Chicago with huge markets, to both the east and the west. Chicago's destiny as center of industry was set, but it would still take some time for Chicago to take advantage of its potential. The first of the markets was the ever-expanding frontier with its agricultural surplus that lay to the west and north of Chicago. In the frontier, a town's distance from a railroad determined what its cost for trade and travel would be. To minimize these costs, new cities and farms popped up very close to the railroads (Martin 81). Train loads of New Englanders came to these new villages in search of the free homesteads that they saw in newspaper advertisements and pamphlets back home. These men and women became the farmers who ended up producing surplus crops which they desired to sell (Gordon 35). According to Mayer, as they looked for their most profitable course of action, their goal was a destination with the most choices of routes, the highest competition, and therefore the lowest rates (Growth 122). With connections to many of the nation's railways, Chicago marked the spot to the farmers of the West. Chicago was the perfect outlet to sell their heavy and relatively inexpensive crops. A: Yes, I worked full-time throughout the entire process. I started working full-time right after I graduated high school, then started taking evening college courses in my 20s. Some years, I took 3-5 classes, other years I took only 1. It would depend on the responsibilities I had to fulfill in my full-time job. Q: Was it difficult to find time for both school and a career? How did you make it work? A: Time management was definitely a challenge! Since I am a morning person, I would often get up extra early, ex. 5 a.m., to write papers or do homework. I studied during my lunch hour at work. And, I would go to the library on weekends to limit distractions and get as much work done as possible in short time increments. There were several occasions I used vacation days to study for major exams or finish large projects. Q: Did your employers help you with your tuition? A:  Yes, I was lucky to have tuition reimbursement from every employer. At the very end of completing my bachelors degree, I was bulking up on classes and had used up the company policy allotment of reimbursement. I appealed to senior management and got additional funding for my last three to four classes which was awesome! Since my masters degree was much more expensive, tuition reimbursement only covered about 50-60% of the costs. Q:  Were there any drawbacks to receiving tuition reimbursement? A:  Other than the small amount of paperwork I needed to submit to human resources, there were no drawbacks. Q:  Like any programs, part-time programs have their pros and cons. What would you consider to be the biggest pro? A:  The biggest pro was I could pick exactly which classes I wanted to take on what nights or weekends with which instructors. I had total control and could best align the schedule with my work and personal life. Q:  How about the most obvious con? A:  In addition to the time management challenges, it took significantly longer to complete my degrees. I also missed out on the full time college experience that many adults talk about for years to come. Q:  Was there any aspect of attending school part-time that you hadnt considered prior to enrolling? In other words, was there anything surprising about your part-time experience? A:  The MBA program in which I enrolled catered to full-time students more than part-time, and the homework requirements were not always realistic. I also did not expect to have full-time students in their early 20s, mixed in with the part-time students, mainly 35, in the evening program. This caused challenges, especially on group projects. Q:  Were there any differences between a part-time undergraduate program and a part-time graduate program? A:  In my experience, yes. The part-time undergraduate program I attended definitely catered more to part-time students, and the attendees were almost all working full-time and going to school at night. The graduate program I attended had many younger students and mixed full-time and part-time students in the same classes. Also, there was significantly more homework and more group projects in my graduate program. Q:  I get a lot of letters from students who are worried that part-time MBA programs will not provide them with the same type of recruiting and networking opportunities that full-time programs can. Did you encounter fewer opportunities in your part-time program or were you satisfied with the level of resources made available to you? A:  Since almost every class I attended had a different mix of students, every class presented new networking opportunities. But, in a part-time program, you need to make more of an effort before class or during breaks. After class, everyone is running to their cars to get home for the evening. I do hear that full-time students have more networking opportunities with their professors. In night school, you dont have that opportunity unless you proactively request one-on-one meeting time. There just isnt time in class. Since I graduated, Ive used Linked In to stay in touch with several students and professors I met in night school. Q:  When you think about your part time MBA experience, what stands out? What were some of the highlights? A:  There were two experiences I want to call out from my MBA program that were particularly rewarding and great learning experiences. The first was a two week trip to Japan. At my university, they offered international travel business electives. For my trip to Japan, we visited about 12 Japanese businesses and learned a lot about their culture. We were graded on several large papers we had to write. I had never been to Japan and it was quite a journey! The second experience was a one-week intensive course I took on World Class Business Operations. I got permission to take five days off from work without using vacation time. The class visited eight New England companies who had won Best Place to Work Awards. We met with senior management, got tours of their operations and learned more about their unique offerings. It was fun and I learned a lot of relevant info I could then apply to my day job. Q:  Overall, are you happy with your decision to earn your degrees through part-time programs? Do you ever wish you would have chosen to attend school full-time instead? A:  No, I have no regrets. Because I went to school part-time, I have a lot more work experience than other working women my age. In this challenging economy, with a lot of competition, I now have both the degrees and the work experience. As someone who has done a lot of interviewing and hiring of employees, I have found that the mix of experience and degrees helps to set an applicant apart from other candidates. Q:  Do you have any additional advice for students who are considering a part-time program? A:  Even taking one class en route to a degree is valuable from a personal development and a resume perspective. Employers like to see that you are striving to complete your education. Also, taking classes that relate to your full-time job will often lead to better job performance. If you dont have any college experience, think about getting a certificate first. Complete that, and then enroll in an Associates program, etc. This is a positive, rewarding path to follow, and when you complete a step, it feels great! Last, if you are getting your MBA, do some additional research to learn more about the ratio of full-time and part-time students in the night classes. I would recommend schools who have fewer full-time students in these classes.
